LOCATION

On the valley hillside, the vegetation extends from the base of the hill, at 1600 MASL, up to summits that reach 3600 MASL. Regarding Flora & Fauna features we have to mention that they match to what is known as mountain jungle/forest and the basal area of a pasture of high heights.

The special weather conditions establish the existence of a series of vegetation belts or floors that can be well distinguished one from the other. A Montana Jungle is defined this way, and it occupies the hills of the valley, which is normally covered by clouds during summer and the beginning of fall.

FLORA & FAUNA

The deciduous trees are predominant. They form the forest that is called the Montano Forest, with the Creole Walnut Tree. Three different types of forest can be found: “Pino del Cerro” “Alisos” and “Queñoas”. The Pino del Cerro is the only one conifer in the Argentine Northwest. The Aliso, which reaches up to Canada, is located in steep slopes. The Queñoa is a little three with a twisted trunck that can be found up to 3000 m. of height over rock walls. It can reach up to 6 m. Over the Montanos Forests we find the high Pastures all made of grasses and other herbs that bloom on the rainy season which gives the landscape an incomparable beauty.

The most representative species are the eagle, the Alisero parrot and a crowd of hummingbirds. To them, it can be added the common southern lapwing, the white heron, common white swifts, partridge, owls, neotropic cormorants and dot-winged crake (Porzana spiloptera). Lagoon small duck, Creamy-bellied thrush, common blackbird and water blackbird, woodpecker, falcon, Southern crested caracara, vulture, sparrowhawk, urraca, Andean sparrow, Andean condor, goldfinch, misto, hooded siskin, double-collared seedeater, etc. All of these birds open the door for birdwatching which has been so popular this time.

Between mammals we can find collar peccary, red brocket, hare, South American raccoon, scrubland fox, Geoffroy's cat, skunk, weasel and small ferret. Also, in the high pasture we can find a native deer, taruca or north Andean deer, which is in danger of extinction.

Many species of mammals live exclusively over the threes as squarrels which runs over the truncks looking for fruits and seeds. The invertebrate fauna has not been studied a lot, but is very wide and rich.
